Have it running, in park, on level ground. The stick is short, and sits in the front of the transmission.
Is this your first transverse engine?

Yes the engine needs to be running at operating temperature, it should say on the dip stick wether to have it in gear, park or nuetral and if it doesn't you should check it in park or nuetral with the engine idling on a level surface you can pull the dip stick and check the fluid level after you have moved the shifter through each position stopping in each one for about five seconds so that the clutches are filled with fluid; you should do this or you could get the wrong reading.

You should check when the transmission is hot, best time to do this is after driving it for a little while. Set the parking brake, and shift into Neutral. Open the hood and pull the transmission dipstick, it is usually located on the driver's side of the engine compartment. when you pull it, wipe it off with a clean cloth and re-insert it, wait a couple of seconds and pull it out. Look at the pattern near the end of the rod, the fluid level should be somewhere on the pattern or between two dots, depending on the way it is marked. If it is below the marks or the dipstick has no fluid on it, then you need to add some. Be careful not to add too much, as this can cause problems.

The info is printed on the dip stick. You should be on reasonably level surface. Never over fill. this causes varnash and isn't good for the tranny.
