Before Gutenberg, there were no newspapers. They DID have town criers in the English speaking countries who gave what we would think of as headlines. Occasionally a bull (official document) would be posted for those who could read, but they were handwritten and expensive.

If something had to be circulated to several places, the government had scribes that copied it. Sometimes a slave with an excellent memory would be trained to carry some news back and forth between locations.

Keep in mind that people DID NOT CARE about places they would never see. They lived where they were born and the gossip mill was the only news source most of them needed.

Newspapers are a creation of the 18th century. News in ancient and medieval times was conveyed by a crier in the central square or market place. E.g., Pheidipides crying "Rejoice we conquer" in the central square in Athens after the battle of marathon (and running the 26 miles from Marathon to Athens). Significant events were the subject poems or art for wider public dissemination (the Iliad and the Odyssey would be examples).

How ancient are we talking about? Messages were printed on papyrus or leather, and send by the hand of messengers on fast horses. The town crier or equivalent would then read the message in the public square to the whole village.
