He was hanged is proper when referring to execution. Most are not hanged at the trial, though in past days many were hanged BEFORE the trial. Hopefully those days are long gone.

Hanged. But the statements are clearly incorrect. No one gets either at a trial, only afterwards.

It is true that the past tense for "Hang" is "Hung" but for executions it is "Hanged".

This makes a minor distinction for the human condition. Quite touching, I think, but possibly lost on those being hanged.
