Carbon is a requirement for life on Earth. It may not be a requirement for life on others worlds. Other elements have similar properties to carbon (for example silicon) that could support life. The only problem would be we may not recognize that life when we find it.
There has been a lot of debate over the years as to what is life, what is necessary for life, etc. And there is no unanimous agreement.
We just don't know at this time.

All life on Earth is carbon based. The fact that no life developed here that is not carbon based leads to the conclusion that non-carbon based life is exceedingly rare if possible at all. We can't say it is impossible though. As far as science can tell us however, a lack of carbon means that life is unlikely to have formed.

Carbon looks like it is needed for life, provided you need long complex chemical chains (like DNA etc.) for life. Carbon is one of the only elements that can really build huge chains, Si and other carbon-like elements could technically build up large molecules, but are entropically more likely break apart than remain stable for long periods of time.
On the other hand Si has been getting serious looks from astrobiologists as far as giving carbon a helping hand in starting up the old ball of life.

We don't know. If we should never find non-carbon based life, it will be likely to be impossible. But we will never be able to rule it out because we can not see every single place where it could have developed.

Doesn't anyone know the meaning of life? Damn so many people are so confused. Carbon is yet just 1 factor of life. OK what I'm trying to say is our whole universe is alive if it wasn't alive it wouldn't exist. Everything that is alive consist of matter, atoms, electrons, photons, hydrogen and so on. If none of that existed nothing would be alive. OK just imagine it at that.

well on earth we find that carbon works well creating enzymes and proteins.
somewhere else under other conditions other material might work better.
we really don't know yet.
It might just be pure carbon out there.
its pure carbon here.

I personally believe that it's possible. To think otherwise would be intellectually ignorant.
