I am building a new house and our builder wants $35k for a bonus room above our garage.(14'x24') I'm a first time buyer and not sure if this is too much money. The bonus room would also come with a bathroom. If this is too much money, how should I go about getting it cheaper?

absolutely....unless its a gold plated bonus room, then it may be worth it.

in all seriousness, where did the figure of $35K come from? this situation solely depends upon your need of the additional space and what this bonus room will add the home as far as re-sale goes (if you plan to sell the home any time in the next 5-7 years). Ask for a breakdown from the builder showing where he comes up with the $35K figure.

One final thing, you never want to be over-built...that meaning the nicest and biggest house in the neighborhood. It makes resale at fair market value much more difficult.

I think its a bit high. What I would do in this situation is get the house built, then shop for a reasonably priced contractor, who can add the bonus room later. In my opinion, going over 15-20 thousand is too much.

That is about $100.00 per sq foot. I would say it's above average. Will it increase the retail value of your house $35K.

If so go for it, you will love the room.

I would think that depends on where you live. You can always get other bids and go with the lowest but get references from them, you often get what you pay for.
