First, you have to understand that the entire ovulation and menstruation cycle is controlled by hormones.
Scientists figured out that if you change the body's hormone levels so that hormones can't trigger ovulation in the first place, you can't get pregnant.
So, when you're on birth control, your body is tricked into thinking it should not ovulate or menstruate. This is similar to the state a woman is in when she's pregnant.
That's it, in a nutshell.

The birth control pill (also called "the Pill") is a daily pill that contains hormones to change the way the body works and prevent pregnancy. Hormones are chemical substances that control the functioning of the body's organs. In this case, the hormones in the Pill control the ovaries and the uterus.
Most birth control pills are "combination pills" containing a combination of the hormones estrogen and progesterone to prevent ovulation (the release of an egg during the monthly cycle). A woman cannot get pregnant if she doesn't ovulate because there is no egg to be fertilized. The Pill also works by thickening the mucus around the cervix, which makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus and reach any eggs that may have been released. The hormones in the Pill can also sometimes affect the lining of the uterus, making it difficult for an egg to attach to the wall of the uterus.

The pill tricks your body into thinking that it is pregnant so you do not ovulate (IE - release an egg from your ovaries). If no egg is released then there is no egg to be fertilized by the sperm.
When on the pill - be very very careful of prescription medications and avoid herbal supplements. Antibiotics (especially anything with penicillin in it) can void the birth control pill - so you can get pregnant. If you get sick - you will have to use a back up method while you are on the anti-biotic and for at least 2 weeks after. Some herbal supplements will also cancel out the pill.

The Pill works by suppressing ovulation so that no egg is released by the ovaries for fertilization by sperm. Ovulation is suppressed through the actions of the hormones (estrogen alone or a combination of estrogen and progestin) that the birth control pill contains.

the hormone in birth control is very similar to the hormone released by the female body after conception, so it basically tricks the body into thinking it's pregnant already (because of the presence of the pregnancy hormone) and as a natural reaction the body quits releasing eggs and ovulating. That is why it is sometimes hard to get pregnant for awhile after you have taken birth control for a long time, because until that hormone is out of your system you wont ovulate..

Affects their hormones. As the person above mentioned, it stops ovulation from taking place.
Birth control refers to birth control not the birth control pill. There are different types of birth control not only the Pill.
These are the different types of birth control:
-Barrier Method (condoms, diaphragms, spercides)
-Hormonal method (Pills that contain oestrogens and progestins and stop ovulation from taking place)
-Ormeloxifene (Keeps the egg from settling, available legally only in India)
-Abortion (self explaining)
-Sterilization (self explaining)
So if you like to have sex but not to have children, try some of the above.

Simple Version:
d pill contains hormones which are released into the woman's body.
these hormones make the woman's body think she is pregnant.
hence an egg isn't released into her ovary(a.k.a womb) so she doesnt get pregnant even when she has unpotected sex coz there is no egg for the sperm to fertilize

most forms of birth control release small doses of hormones to enable you to get pregnant but if you miss even one little dose or your timing is off on taking it you run the risk of getting pregnant.
