I want to know what its like to be a vet. Do you have to handle a lot of blood because I'm not the surgery type. I probaly won't mind blood test but I wanted to know that mostly? I'm pretty young and still have a while till collage but, I just want to study up on a job before I go to collage. If you don't think this is the job for me since I don't like messing with blood tell me. I'm a real animal lover and I want a job with animals and a job that I can get good money from. If you have any books to rec amend then give me the name and ill see if I can find it and read it.

You need to be able to handle blood..even if not doing surgery, pus, poop, vomit, and the GREATEST.....maggoty flesh (on a living animal).

Animals that have been hit by a car can be pretty darn bloody!!!!!

Vet Techs handle all the same things. I have picked MORE than my fair share of maggots out of dogs and cats..and one rabbit. And TONS of blood.

Well I'm not a vet, but I am a technician, so it's the same work environment. Yes, you have to deal with blood in the veterinary field, and not only in surgery. Dogs or cats may come to your hospital that are seriously injured by being hit by a car or by getting in a fight with another animal. You also have to draw blood to do blood tests.
I used to be a little nervous about blood, but once you're actually on the scene working with the animal, you just do what you have to in order to save it's life or make it better.
If you can't get over the blood, but still want to work with animals, maybe get into animal behavior or animal physical therapy. Although you will probably be exposed to some blood in college classes you will be required to take, you will not have to work with it every single day.

I graduate from college on Friday as a Veterinary Technician. I absolutely love it, but one thing I will tell you is that you work a lot with blood, poop, pee, puke, and everything else. And I mean EVERYTHING. I work side by side with the veterinarians and they do more blood tasks then we do. Plus they do all the surgeries which includes cutting the animals open and digging around to fix the problem. It might be something that you will grow out of. I wasn't sure of it to begin with but while I was in high school I went to a local veterinary hospital and they let me shadow for a while. I got to watch everything they did and sometimes participate. I decided that 8 years to become a veterinarian and the cost of college was way too much for me and decided to be a veterinary technician instead which is only 2 years. Its a very rewarding field and if you love animals it might be for you. Get your hands dirty, go out and see what you can get started with. I went to the Vet Tech Institute in Pittsburgh PA and I know they have other campuses around the US. I had girls in my class that were a bit uneasy about blood but its something you can grow out of. Good luck, if you have any questions feel free to email me!

If you don't like working with blood, you probably would have a hard time as a vet. Vets have to do everything, there are very few specialties. Even if you somehow find a job where there are no emergencies taken to you, you still have to go through the training. Maybe you'd prefer a job as a Vet Tech?
