Hatchbacks are horribly non-aerodynamic and create vacuum behind the rear glass and trunk lid as you drive. Crap tends to form on the whole rear end not only the glass. Look at as many as you can and you'll see that the rear decks are filthy. The wiper is a vein attempt to allow the driver to squirt windshield washer fluid on the rear glass as the wipers operate just to SEE out the back end.

Cars which are shaped aerodynamically correct do not collect the crud on the rear glass because there's the air and rain sweep across the shape of the body more efficiently.

beacuse the angle of the hatchback window tends to shed water less than a sedan. i myself have asked this question, i personally think a wiper on the rear window of all cars might help rear visibility.

because the rear window on hatches is at a steep angle, water tends to pool on it; requiring something to wipe it off.

also because the hatch opens, allowing water into the cabin when open, wiper stops that happening
