I'm not sure what they are getting at... normally you would subtract 68 from both sides:

x = 413 - 68
x = 345

That requires a subtraction sign.

I suppose you could do this by adding a negative 68 to both sides:

68 + x + (-68) = 413 + (-68)
x = 345

Technically that's a negative sign and not a subtraction. Does that count?

I'm not really sure if that is possible. That's the only way to get x alone since the 68 is not multiplied or divided by anything

(68 + x) put that to the negative power
so it would be
-68-x=413
so you would add
-x=481 then just divide by a negative to get x by its self
x= -481

That makes no sense...no subtraction sign?

Is the teacher mad or something?

the answer is obvious but i see no way in getting it without subtracting on paper or in your head...

when it says solve for x it means you have to get an x by itself, there is no way to get x by itself if you do not subtract, that's weird...

your teacher really gotta be kidding...
