I'd recommend the corn snake, they're by far the easiest to handle out of the two, from my experience. All the carpet pythons i've ever encountered seemed nippy and just not pleasant, which could be handling, but for a first time snake, and a first time owner i wouldnt recommend a tempermental snake. A ball python and a redtail would be good too, as long as you're prepared to learn alot about the animal and provide a large snake with a good home. corns would not get nearly as large, or as possibly dangerous as a boa or a python.

I bought my son a two corn snakes a year ago and they have turned out to be great. They dont get to big and they are not aggressive at all. Myself I like boas but they get big. If your looking for a snake that you can manage by yourself or might be around kids then I would say the corn snake is the way to go

Carpet pythons are beauties, but they get pretty big. If you are at all intimidated by snakes, or creeped out by the possibility of being bitten, get a corn. Carpets are nippy, many will improve with handling, but some of it is just due to how they live, they don't necessarily bite out of meaness, but if the occasional bite is a problem for you, go corn.
corns don't get as big, and require easier to maintain temps, etc.
My family has both, and love them equally well, but they have very different temperments.

I agree wioth the corn snake, however if you decide that you want to go up to a bigger snake. (after deciding you can handle the reptile world) than I recomend a red tailed boa. I have a very sweet 4 foot female name Stelina. I started out with her(got lucky, she taught me a lot) she never once struck or hissed at me and I handle my snake frequenly. (except after feeding and during shed.

You really can't beat a corn snake for a first snake...they come in many beautiful colors and patterns, don't get too big, and are easy to care for. They are also very sweet and rarely, if ever, bite. Check out:

The cornsnake would be the best of the two but ball pythons are by far the best starter snake.
