I may be a little rude, but we are in the year 2007 where we dreamed of the future back in the 1980. So why cant we figure out a better way to combat fire over the top of surfaces. Can we stop investing on computers and plasma tvs for a year....

I hate to say this but there is no money in advancing techniques to fight fires, so no one has even thought about it!!!!!

Guys it's not about today's technology or having better prevention techniques. Its about the weather. This last year has been one of californias driest years yet and because of that when you add the hot temperatures and the 50 mile and hour winds there are gonna be fires no matter what you do. Maybe there could be better ways to contain the fires once they start but other than that what we really need to keep fires from happening is more rain, which unfortunatley we can't control. All we can do is just pray and keep our eyes on where the fires are at and wait them out!

The best you can do is fuel control and property setbacks, which are rather successful. However, with the Santa Anna's + dry vegetation that needs fire for reproduce there is nothing except the ocean what will stop the fire. Remember Santa Anna's reduce the relative humidity into the single digits, increase the temperature, and blows consistently over 50mph to over 80. The Santa Anna's plus fire is one of the most destructive forces on earth. Its common knowledge amongst Southern Californians and that unless the wind stops the fire will go to the sea.

its really hard because it is THE EXATCT SAME PLACES THAT GOT BURNED LAST TIME!!!! We live in hard times. back then you could bank on things to happen but now you just have to be safe because everything is just random. also the fires are BIG, my house is so close you can here firemen talking about how to get the fire out if you leave the house and listen carefully. it is a scary yet still stunning sight the fire. and to answer the one about ensurance and all that its beacuse of president bush (thank you for 2008 elections!)

Fires are fought from above by airplanes and helicopters. What else are you proposing? It sucks, but fires are all part of living in Southern California. Most of the time, they aren't this bad (or this numerous!) but you come to expect them from October through December, when the Santa Ana's start to blow. Homeowners just need to be aware and take whatever precautions they can, especially those in the more rural areas.

The truth is and seeing as how I too live in the fire prone Southwest... we do know how to build fire-resistant homes...we also know how to do the little things to keep fire from getting to your house...trimming the weeds away from your propriety.... The Forest Service even give out a little book on how to protect your home for free!!!
the bad news is you have to do all this yourself... no one comes in to do it for you and if you don't plan ahead...well...buy one of the new line of fire proof computers and plasma TVs and pray for the best!

Prevention of California fires won't take as much "modern technology" as it will just reality thinking on the part of the people who live there. California fires. Just another round of the same old thing that people won't use their brains to prevent. God Bless you.
