Along the lines of "we beat the ____ last night" etc. Some say since you pay for tickets and merchandise all the time, it's OK. Others say it's only OK if you're on the team or in ownership. What are your thoughts?

Yeah, when the Cardinals won last year, I was congratulated numerous times. It's not like I did anything, but I congratulated my friend when the Colts won the Super Bowl. It seemed appropriate, especially when you are really passionate about your team doing well and have gone through the painful losses before.

I think its OK to do that. If you're really into it, the team becomes part of your identity. Also, at a lot of stadiums when the home team is introduced they introduce them as "Your ______" over the PA speakers. Right there the team itself is telling you that the fans are part of the team.

Of course it's OK, in fact, that's what MLB and the teams want you to do. Identify with the team, then you will go to more games (or watch on TV - they benefit from the TV advert revenue too). No one thinks they own the country when they say, "My country, right or wrong." (a rather unfortunate phrase, but just illustrating the point) So I'll continue to shed a tear for my Cubs until we get to the magic "next year." That's really coming in 2008, right?

It's fine. People that nitpick that are just trying to be annoying and get under your skin.
Look at it this way. Every athelete ever interviewed will tell you how important the crowd can be at times. You're part of that crowd. And in baseball there's no salary cap so the money you spend on your team dictates what kind of players they sign, so once again you do have an impact.

I do it also. I live in the city, pay the salaries and taxes. I should call it my team. Im a O's fan, so people say " Your tean sucked *** this year", and I say "I know. I hope Joe Torre signs with my O's!!!!"

Of course you call it "my team"--I mean you're not going to say if you're a Yankee fan "Mr Steinbrenners's team was really awesome last night"--THAT'S THE IDEA OF BEING A FAN!-WE PAY AND THEY PLAY!!

dont kid yourself--unless you have ownership in the team it's not your team. As much as you love team "x", the ownership will leave your city if they dont make the money needed.
ps--its "your" city because you pay taxes :)

Well, I don't think the team could do it without the fans, emotionally and financially. I think it's ok to call ____ your team.
