First off, sorry for the misspellings... For some reason spell check is being an a-hole.
Why do people like rap, heavy metal or jazz? It is all a matter of taste. As long as the band is good and not a cookie cutter ripoff of something trendy... You should be able listen to what you want.
Oh, sorry. First off true "alternative" music doesn't exist anymore. It was started in the late 80's by bands like Mudhoney and the Pixies.. blending punk rock with new wave and pop to form Grunge. Grunge was brought into to the mainstream by Nirvana with the release of Nevermind in 1991 and was built upon by Alice in Chains with Dirt and Pearl Jam with Ten. Other bands soon came into the public eye but few achieved the status of the three previously mentioned. Pearl Jam with the release of Versus started to move away from Grunge and can truly be considered the bad that made alternative famous. R.E.M., The Cure and Red Hot Chili Peppers among others came first but didn't achieve the level of Pearl Jam until afterwards. Its founding members so to speak... Everclear, Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis (begrudgingly), Nine Inch Nails (a blend of Alternative and Industrial) and Rage Against the Machine (The Heavy side of Alternative).
True alternative is a blend of different styles that make it hard if not impossible to catagorize.
What you have now is again a highbred of sorts.. Not Alternative not Pop... but something altogether different. I like to call it crap for the most part.
Why do I like it?
1) It is more accessable than Heavy Metal but often had the same razor sharp edge.
2) It was expressive with out being wining emo annoying.
3) It reminds me of growing up, my first job, my first car, and my first love.
4) Much like rap in the early 80's, punk in the 70's, and phsicodelic in the 60's it was altogether different from anything of its time.
That help?

It's just a matter of musical taste. Why do some people like pasta while others hate it. It's basically the same question. It all varies from person to person, what they were raised listening to and what musical taste they have.

option is, in my opinion, something that sits outdoors of the mainstream for a definite reason. working example, maximum 'option' bands initiate out on self sustaining labels which immediately marks them out as an 'aternative' to the mainstream. those labels then enable them to be much less formulaic of their album creation (they do no longer ought to stay with as many mainstream regulations) to that end allowing their paintings to be 'diverse' to maximum different track. interior the case of Radiohead, they might have observed the 'Oasis' development and continued to launch albums that each and one and all sounded an analogous. yet they rather chosen to no longer reflect 'The Bends' and observed their very own instincts to create an option sound (newborn A, Amnesiac and so forth). wish that facilitates.

*shrugs* Everybody has a different taste in music. Personally, I love alternative music because of its lyrics and the music itself.

I like it because whenever I sing to it or listen to it, and they scream during the song, it releaves a lot of personal stress and anger built up inside of me. I like listening to various alternative bands, like Evanescence, Death Cab For Cutie, Paramore, Incubus, etc. etc.
I liked this question ;) (wink* wink*, my username :)

Music is meant for self expression, and most people can identify with the artist they're listening to.

Because it is an alternative to others.
Now and then, a change is good. Thus, it is called alternative music.
