There is 2400 acres burning in Malibu and some 15,000 in Orange. I know there is money in Malibu but it should be about people and danger to them not homes.

Coragryph is correct. I just spoke with my brother-in-law in the area and my father-in-law, now retired, was battalion chief of the L.A. County fire dept and stationed in Malibu. They lived in Carbon Canyon. The Malibu area is more densely populated so the number of firefighters, as stated in your question, is concentrated in the area of the greater population. It really is not about saving the homes of the wealthy--that's just the circumstances of the population concentration. Also, people like my family are not wealthy. They're public servants who live in a wealthy area.

Because of the different characteristics of the fires -- it's not just raw acreage -- it's homes and businesses and people's lives that are at risk.

A huge fire burning in open scrub land is much easier to start controlling -- and takes less people -- than one that is dancing in and out of canyons and jumping between homes and buildings.
