The main petroleum products coming from the refinement of the same crude are: 1. Petrol 2.Diesel 3.Cooking gas 4.Kerosene India is dependent on imports to the extent of 80% of its crude requirements. When the price of the imported crude goes up due to oil price hike by producers as also due to rupee-dollar exchange fluctuation, the cost of inputs to the refineries goes up. The input price being totally not within the control of the refineries in India, the output prices have to be jacked up if the oil companies have to do viable business. The prices of Diesel, Cooking gas and Kerosene can not be jacked up as frequently as the input costs go up, due to public outcry and vote politics. The only other product with least resistance for price hike is petrol which has to bear the burden of the cost hike in the case of other three products, to the extent there is deficit!
