A nurse explained to me this way, if you feel your belly tightening a little but still aren't sure, poke your cheek and then your belly, if your belly is soft like your cheek, it's not a contraction at all, then poke your forehead and then your belly. If your belly is hard like your head, then that's a contraction, a braxton hicks anyway. Not that you can't tell the difference between hard or soft, it's just to help you gage. You'll get used to recognizing them the further along you go. The real ones, you'll just know b/c they'll hurt so much you'll break a sweat...lol. Take care!

Braxton Hicks are sporadic uterine contractions that honestly begin at approximately 6 weeks, despite the fact that you will not be competent to believe them that early. You normally may not begin to become aware of them till someday after midpregnancy, in the event you become aware of them in any respect (a few females do not). They get their title from John Braxton Hicks, an English health practitioner who first defined them in 1872. As your being pregnant progresses, Braxton Hicks contractions generally tend to come back rather extra normally, however till you get in your final few weeks, they must stay rare, abnormal, and well-nigh painless. Sometimes, regardless that, Braxton Hicks are difficult to differentiate from early indicators of preterm hard work. Play it riskless and do not attempt to make the prognosis your self. If you have not hit 37 weeks but and you are having 4 or extra contractions in an hour, or have another indicators of preterm hard work, name your caregiver instantly. By the time you are inside a few weeks of your due date, those contractions would possibly get extra excessive and extra widespread, and reason a few soreness. Unlike the prior painless and sporadic Braxton Hicks contractions that prompted no visible cervical difference, those would possibly aid your cervix "ripen": steadily melt and efface, and possibly even start to dilate a little bit. This interval is oftentimes known as "pre-hard work."

braxton hicks feel like your stomach is rock hard, and tightening without any pain, this is why they are false contractions, they tighten and go away if you get menstrual like cramps, that start at the top of your stomach and work their way down and are in your back and keep coming no matter what you do, no matter what you do!!!!!!! then those are real contractions! good luck!

Your stomach gets really hard for about a minute and then goes back to normal. When I got mine, it was kind of tough for me to breath because I was so big. Mine never really hurt though, they were just uncomfortable.
