I would choose Portugal, actually we intend to go to Greece, but Portugal is more desirable than here, with all the crime. Look at Charleys answer.

I think you know my answer. My daughter and I left UK so she could grow up in a safer enviroment. I was single parent on benefits. I left everything back in the UK (even my dog) to go to a place I didn't know where I knew no one and didn't speak the language. All we had was £300 a tent and each other. Thanks to the kindness of foreign strangers we made it and are still here. I now have a great and well paid job, we have just bought a house, and even have 3 horses. By the way I did go back to get my dog, about 2 months after settling over here. I would never return to the UK. My daughter says she can't live there as she (and I quote) " would not have a life there" meaning she would not be able to go out with her mates without me, she would not be allowed to the cinema with her mates (without me trailing behind) So if I had to choose bringing my child up in the UK or anywhere else I would have to choose anywhere else. My daughter is 12 now.

Well judging by the UK press and some people on heres support for child neglect I would like to say Portugal. But I'm a multi-cutural inner city Londoner. London does not go to the world, the world comes to London - and I'm too proud of it to leave.
Lorelei - forgets that the distribution of wealth is far more uneven in the UK than Portugal. So if despite having a higher overall GDP the poor in the UK are worse off.

Super question Stormy!
Methinks its got more to do with a country's culture, modern or traditional, not necessarily the UK or Portugal...
Dunno if i'm spelling it right but the Germans have a term for this...the Germeinschaft (traditional) society & the Gesellschaft (modern) society...wherein the values in a traditional society are more oriented towards family and safety while in the modern society there is more emphasis on materialism & consumerism.
Way to go Charley!

We're seriously thinking of going to Spain. Some of my family are out there now and my main reason for doing so, is for my 11 yr old son. My other children, who are all older, have all said they will follow suit if we go.
So, given the choice between Portugal and the UK, it would have to be Portugal.

I think I would head for Portugal. I live in Spain and know I would prefer my child to grow up here, and it's similar to Portugal. Contrary to the press Portugal is very child friendly, like Spain children are welcome everywhere and two or three generations of family living together is normal. I think you'll find the same in Greece, good luck to you, especially learning the language. Keep us all posted on here what happens.

UK. London is the most thrilling city on Earth. Just ask the hoards of people who flock here from abroad every year.
lol
UK is over 50% richer than Portugal in terms of GDP per capita, meaning that average standard of living is much higher in UK than in Portugal.
Of course, because you've only been to the touristy Portugal, you wouldn't see this.
