Kids cannot vote because we are under the illusion that only educated responcible adults are qualified to vote in this country. Which for the most part is true.... however, I can show you many exeptions to this theory.

However, you can be 'involved' in elections. Start in your local city or town. Find the candidate that you support and help them with their election effort. Keep a record of all your hard work because this will look great on your college transcripts. Get the politician you 'help' to write a letter saying that they appreciated your efforts in helping with the campaign, whether they won or lost doesn't matter.

Do what you can to be civic minded in your own community. Perhaps hold an 'unofficial' election where only kids get to vote so that they feel involved in the whole political process. Hold debates for the kids to stand up and defend who they want to vote for and allow them to give the reasons why.
You may want to have an adult standing by to keep things from getting out of control, and to give some explination of what/and who is being voted on.

It would be great to get kids involved early in the political process. One day.... You will take over the world.

Only those that are legally responsible have the right to vote. As children are under the age of full legal responsibility, they are not allowed to vote. Voting is a right that carries with it implied responsibilities that are beyond a child. You will note that the voting age and the age at which one is eligable for military service is the same? There you are.

IMMATURITY! They are too easily influenced by others. They don't have the maturity to research the issues. They haven't lived in the real world to know what the impact would be to their votes.

Personally I think 18 is too young!

They aren't educated enough, and if you want to have an effective Representative Democracy, you have to have educated people making the most informed decisions when voting.
