I'm sorry that you don't feel comfortable with talking to your mom about these issues.

1. Periods are what allows the woman's body to be able to get pregnant later down the road. That process is called the menstrual cycle. The pituitary gland (a gland at the back of our brain) sends a message to the other organs to tell them to cause estrogen and progesterone (two of the hormones our bodies make) to get ready for the possibility of a pregnancy occurring. If the woman doesn't get pregnant that month then the pituitary gland sends out another message saying time for the special lining that would have nourished a pregnancy had it occurred to now break down. That lining then comes out as clots (this is normal for some women to have). When this comes out blood will also come out.

2. Breasts are part of a woman's body that allows her to be able to feed her baby. They are also part of the sexual pleasure process in adults.

The bra is designed to hold breasts when wearing clothes.

3. Boys make a different kind of hormone that allows them to be able to have sperm which is the other part of what makes a baby. With his sperm he can determine the sex of the baby.

The reason that sometimes sites are recommended for further reading is because sometimes the way it's worded can be an easier explanation.

If you have other questions for me please feel free to e-mail or IM me off site. Also, if you have a trusted adult female friend please don't hesitate to have this discussion with them too.

1. Periods: All women have them. They are just the eggs inside our bodies that we didn't fertilize. They come out of your vagina as your period. All it is is blood. Most girls get their periods from 10-14, but it is normal to be as early as 8 and as late as 16. They come once a month, and while they are a sign of womanhood, they also are quite annoying.

2. Breasts: Yours will grow eventually. :) Everyone's are different sizes, and they are really only there to feed babies some day. Bras hold them in place, so they aren't saggy and heavy. They are like underwear, but for your breasts. Bras start with training bras, which are just strips of fabric that go over a girls breasts, to give her a little protection. Then you start in real bras. They come in a lot of sizes, and when you need one, your mom will help you find your size. Or you can find a way to calculate it online.

3. Boys: The male maturation is not quite as complicated as the female. I would talk about it, but am not really an expert. (That's why I spend my time in the women's section.) I don't want to give you wrong info. If you really have questions, you could go over and ask in Men's Health.

Also, I know you said no websites, but www.beinggirl.com has some pretty good information. Go check it out.

Good luck! :)

don't be scared. every adult on the face of the planet has gone through puberty and lived.

1) periods are when the lining of the uterus that is built up in case of conception is shed. it happens approx. every month, but if when you get your period it's not regular, don't worry about it, because it usually isn't in the beginning. i've had my period for 3 years and it's still not very regular. when you get your period for the first few times use a pad. after that if you want to try using a tampon, try it, but don't feel obligated. it doesn't matter. you might get cramps along with your period, but you might not. i rarely get any and when i do they aren't very bad.

2) breasts develop because they produce the milk that a baby needs. don't worry about your breasts developing too early or too late. i have a friend that was a c cup at age 13 grade while i'm 16 and still an a. which brings us to bras. they just, well, hold up your boobs lol. there's not much else to them. start off with sports bras or training bras because they are more comfortable and will fit better. once you grow a bit you can try regular bras.

3) i'm not going into full details about guys, but just know that once they are capable of producing sperm (the male sex organ. the egg which is associated with the period is the female sex organ) they have reached full sexual maturity.

i know you don't want websites, but www.kidshealth.org has trustworthy info about boys and girls puberty.
