I've lived in both and love Austin.
I LOVE Austin. I will move back once I convince my husband he'd love it too.
Dallas is fast paced and in my opinion, cold and unfriendly. There are things to do but they ususally cost an arm and a leg.
In Austin, there is free music nightly, culture EVERYWHERE, lots of outdoor eateries, festivals on the weekends. There are lots of hike/bike trails.
I made the best friends of my life in Austin. I also started my police dispatching and herbal science careers in Austin.

Basic rule of thumb: If your "ritzy" move to Dallas. If you're "laid-back" move to Austin.

There is no comparing the two. Dalas is bigger so offers more opportunities, but those are lost by its cold feeling and lack of any personality whatsoever.
Austin is a great city, it has live music entertainment everywhere, the lakes running through the city, a lot of growth, but at the same time remains one of the US' greenest and healthiest cities. Also for any activity that Austin lacks that Dallas might provide, San Antonio is less than 2 hours away and is larger than Dallas.
Finally, Austin is in the Texas Hill Country and Home to the UT Longhorns and who could ask for more than that??

Austin. Hands down. First off, living in Austin, for the most part, is pretty cheap. The people are friendlier and will sometimes talk to you for no reason other than to be nice (I'm one of them)
If you are into technology stuff, Austin is a pretty cool city to get a job within that field. Also, there are a lot of independent shops and places that are fun to go to.
Plus, San Antonio is only about two hours away.
Austin is so much fun!

Dallas. It's a much larger city with greater social and economic diversity.
Many people prefer Austin though; it's a large University/Government town with a great high tech base; a very vibrant, unique and up & coming city developmentally speaking. Also the natural scenery is more attractive than Dallas.
Most people who would choose to live in Austin wouldn't even consider Dallas, vice versa.
The cities are pretty much incomparable due to they have completely different vibes.

Austin might no longer be the suitable place for you in case you appreciate performing. it somewhat is greater regarding the exterior, activities, music, action picture and 6th highway. Fredricksburg is a rustic city particularly Germany, yet Austin isn't. Dallas has great areas and delightful botanical gardens yet I want Austin via far.
