New England road trip - where to stay?

My boyfriend and I are planning a road trip this spring from where we live (near Toronto, ON) to the East coast provinces. We'd like to go through Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to stay, or even, what to make sure to see.

I'd cut through Lake Placid (interesting Olympic stuff), Burlington, Vermont (funky town), then over to Maine, where the coastline is pretty interesting. Then up to the Provinces.
