They were one of many groups that Germany discriminated against -- Poles, Gypsies, Gays, -- pretty much any minority.
Jews were an easy target for two reasons -- one, they were a different religion than the majority and thus could naturally be considered an enemy -- and two, because many were very rich and most of the rest were at at least well-off, meaning that they had money and property that were very profitable for the govt to seize.

There seems to be evidence that Hitler was part Jewish himself. He certainly lacked Arian traits. There are also some stories about an affair he had with his niece who was Jewish and he caught syphilis. I am also at a loss of where his hatred developed.
Goering is also a contradiction. When younger his household had Jewish servants and he was known to defend Jews from bigots. But something changed.
Himmler as well. His wife was Jewish. Her parents came to him to ask clemancy such as immigrating. He simply shouted "Out Jew!" And by the next day heading to a concentration camp and death.
I do know Hitler blamed Jews for losing WWI. But nothing would support the belief. Many Jews served the trenches of WWI. But the Rothschilds that were a good part of Europes banking industry were Jewish and blamed for not financing Germany enough to win. I would fail to believe they were so big as to outweigh other banks though.
To anyone of Jewish heritage. Thank you for enduring the Holocost. Had the Nazis treated Jewish people as citizens and been in the war industry and military, probably 10 million more Germans. Einstein and others would have developed the atomic bomb and today we would all be goose stepping to the music of Wagner. A tragic thing in history. But never think for a moment any of your lives were sacraficed without purpose. You are probably the biggest reason that WWII turned out as it did. Establishing and suporting Israel is the Western World attempting to repay the Jewish people. Though not nearly as much as we would like or you deserve.

Hatred of the Jew goes back to the 16th century and further - Europeans had gone from a Pagan Roman Empire filled with earth worshipping people who could not read there were huge sums of peasants and so on Life was primitive in most circles A large % of the population were "crofters" still
A "Christian" Europe did not solve any of the social problems - The Roman Empire had ruled there with the Papacy being supreme
The catholic church of Rome had taught for many centuries that the Jews killed Jesus -
That the Jews were no one to listen to (the priests could read the Jews could read - but the population could not ) The Jews - could read and that was a threat
So the Jewish migration into Europe is not a friendly one - A parculiar people moving in tightly knit groups that were met by people who had no education were raised in filth and could not read - who believed in a contridiction of ancient gods and creatures mixed with the papacy's version of Christianity
Can you see the set up on both sides as to why they would not like each other ?
The Jews prospered and quickly made it up the food chain of nobilty
They lent the King of England money - In the 10 th or 11 century the King had them deported for attemping to interfere with his domestic rights to govern his realm
Wether it is true or not - or if he just needed an exsuse not to pay them back - Doesn't matter it made an impression and furthered an already bad reputation
Believe it or not the Jews were not the first on Hitler's list they were about 3rd
But they were believed to have preverted the money system inb Germany - to have lied and cheated to get their positions and were out to destroy Germany
Given their 400 year old reputation it wasn't a hard sell in Germany
That is a backdrop to why -
And all that said I honestly believe that if "we" the European stock had have met the Jews later on when we as a civilization and a society were a little more advanced none of these misunderstanding would have occured

Nobody knows for sure, but there are several theories:
1. Hitler's mother went to see a Jewish doctor who informed her she had cancer, which soon killed her. As a child, Hitler blamed the doctor for the diagnosis.
2. Hitler wanted to be an artist as a young man. He was denied entry into Vienna's art university (can't recall the name) for lack of talent and he blamed the Jewish professors on the admissions board.
3. After Germany's defeat in WWI, Hitler, like most Germans, were unwilling to accept the fact they lost the war and chose Jews as scapegoats, blaming them for "stabbing Germany in the back". The truth is, Germany never had a chance to win once the US entered the war. All the other participants had been bled dry and were sick of the war when America began sending millions of fresh troops eager to fight and vast amounts of supplies the Germans couldn't match.

To answer this question, you have to know the PUBLIC reason he gave for hating the Jews, and the PRIVATE one.
PUBLIC: Hitler subscribed to the theory that Germans were a superior race. He created a whole mythology of how the Germans were once a great nation and race, but that by mingling with inferior races, and by (supposed) interference by the Jews, the Germans had been betrayed.
Back when Hitler was gaining power, Germany had been reduced to a very poor country because it had to pay reparations to France and England for WWI. These reparations were stiff, and it made Germany poor. It was commonly believed that Jews had conspired against the Germans. Many of the people who suffered deprivation believed what the Nazis were saying, that the Jews had conspired to keep Germany weak, and that Jews wanted to dominate the planet.
To substantiate this belief, a document that is widely believed to be fraudulent, called "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" was "discovered" by the Nazis. The document was described the Jewish plan to dominate the planet. (remember, it is widely believed to be a phony; the Nazis created it for propaganda)
This got support for people to have the Jews. Finally, the Germans had a "face of evil" to explain why they were in such bad shape. It was Nazi propaganda against the Jews.
Also, since the Jews were usually wealthier than average Germans, Hitler needed their money for the war effort. It was a convenient excuse to steal all their property and possessions.
Now, the PRIVATE reason.
I have heard many stories, such as that Hitler himself was part Jewish (and I believe this has been substantiated; he may have been something like 1/8 Jewish. I believe a great-grandmother was Jewish in his family). He felt ashamed about not having "pure, Aryan blood".
I've also heard that he had problems with a Jewish teacher, or other Jews who denied him entrance into art school, and he despised them for it.

Hitler needed to blame the economic problems Germany was having on someone, he noticed that the Jewish people were better educated as a whole and therefor had more money and better opportunities, so he used them as a scapegoat and blamed all of the countries woes on them.
It really had nothing to do with their religion at first, just the fact that these people had better educations and more wealth.
If your a good student of history you'll be able to see some similarities between this train of thought and what is happening today, certain groups of people blaming their own problems on others.

Because back then Europe was very anti-semetic. This anti-semetism was brought about by christians like Martin Luther, the founder of the Protestant movement. Martin Luther at first loved jews, but then started persecuting them when jews would not convert to christianity. He even wrote a book titled, "The Jews and their lies".
If you do some research you will find Hitler using christianity to bash jews.
If you look hard enough you will find that Hitler once drew a painting of an Aryan baby Jesus.

Because the Rothschild family led a movement to try and bankrupt Germany at the conclusion of WW I. Hitler felt that Jews were part of the problem and not true to the nation he loved so much. The art school thing is a myth.
He ended up a very crazy man...but he was also Time magazine man of the year in 1939 I believe...
Edit: as many others have said, it is a scapegoat thing...but in my experience there is some truth to every myth.

like another user said, people have always hated the Jews. the holocaust was not the first time the Jews have been persecuted. another one of the reasons behind the hatred was that following the treaty of versailles, the citizens of germany suffered financially. inflation was ridiculous, and it seemed like the only ones that weren't suffering were the Jews (who are reputably successful when it comes to work). blaming everything on the Jews made the germans feel like their woes were not their fault, and it gave them a common cause and unity.

this is because of the fact they do no longer slot in everywhere. Christians have north united statesa., south united statesa., europe and so on for the main area. Muslims have center east, pakistan and so on. Hindus have india and different indo form places.. You get the assumption. all the Jews somewhat have is Israel. in case you have 2 diverse religions located in one area, surprisingly hundreds of years in the past, the main in all probability effect is violence and oppression and mass killings. merely look on the muslim vs hindu slaughtering in pre-partition India. faith is capacity once you're contained in maximum persons. As such, many excuses have been made as motives to kill the Jews. working example, that they killed Jesus, or that they monopolize the financial gadget, or that they are ignorant and boastful. All in all, the Jews are/have been maximum in all probability persecuted so as that they did no longer develop into the greater suitable "race". Christianity and Islam is organic bloodshed, the Jews under no circumstances stood a gamble. it somewhat is bigoted, yet such is existence. the hunt for capacity and autonomy has unquestionably formed background.
