My husband and I recently moved and we needed to paint, lay tile, and carpeting. During this process we had to go without our kitchen appliances. We used our microwave and outdoor BBQ to fix all of our meals. We also had to go without our bed, sleep on a mattress on the floor, so we could easily move it around during the carpet/tile phase. Most of our furniture and personal belongings stayed out in the garage and packed in boxes.
So, I can say with all honesty, and with very fresh memory, yes, my microwave is extremely important!! Without that microwave, we would have been forced to eat out for every meal, which as you can imagine, would have been extremely expensive!! We are extremely grateful for our microwave!!
I too use it a lot even in normal situations. I soften butter on a regular basis, melt cheese too, pop popcorn, (boy does this reduce labor and time!!) heat up all sorts of leftovers, and even occassionally cook a potatoe when our propane runs out unexpectedly in our BBQ. (We cook steaks and hamburgers every week on our outdoor 'stove')
I never actually take my microwave for granted, though. I think this is due to raising so many teenagers and how they saved me a ton of work by heating up their own food, be it leftovers or freezer foods teens so love. Even now with the children grown, I totally appreciate my microwave. Oh, yeah, I can soften ice cream too! Our freezer really does a tremedously grand job, which makes it nearly impossible for me to actually get the ice cream out of the container. I few moments on "soften" and it comes out like a dream, yet still has its form and feel. I am very fortunate to have a microwave with this feature, the "soften" feature I mean. lol I bought it especially for that feature too!
I have been looking at microwaves at stores when we are out at those that have appliances. I often stop in at Sears, or go to the section with appliances when at Walmart, or Home Depo, Lowes, etc. I have yet to find one with this 'soften" feature!
However, for those of you reading this who are interested in this sort of feature, I have a secret way now to accomplish the same thing with a microwave that does not have this particular button. Put your power at 25% for a few moments and it will slowly soften the item. Now, while you are learning what takes which amount of time, make sure you set it for one minute to start, and then check it. Also, remember that different outside temps will have a bearing on how long it takes to soften properly. Colder temps take a bit longer than warm temps. lol
What I like most about actually having this feature is it gives me the times automatically, I don't have to guess.
Yes, I love my microwave! It is extremely important to me!!
