I don't know if this will answer your question, but I don't really understand it...so here goes.

There are 46 chromosomes, usually, in humans. 23 from each sex cell.

23 pairs; 46 total. Our primate ancestors had 24 pairs; see Ken Miller's address to Case Western Reserve (use Google to find it) to learn how one pair got lost.
