It sounds simple but should I dress formally or casual or what? Of course I won't wear jeans. If you've been to one, some help here would be apprieciated.

I live in the Midwest(MN) if that helps the answers become easier to make. I got tickets through school so they were cheaper too.

I wear jeans to the opera, I don't see the problem in dressing casually. But if you don't want to do that, maybe wear something a bit smarter like black trousers, or a skirt or something. If you have a job, wear what you would wear to work. I don't think it really matters.

Whenever I've been to an opera, the majority of people have been dressed quite casually. I don't see why I get thumbs down for stating facts.

Depends what part of the country. In the south they are more traditional, so they tend to dress up more. I have been to the SF opera, and I got all snazzed up, only to discover that people wear whatever they want. Californians aren't too proper any more... When you spend hundred$$ on the tickets, you would expect it to be a good crowd, but I guess out here there is just no dress code anymore.
My husband would never have worn a ball cap in a restaurant years ago, or shorts, or sandals. Now, it's like "who cares?" Everyone is dressed like that.

Wear a comfortable skirt and top something not to fancy but nice enough to go out on a fancy date...or you could wear something funky but in style like a short-sleeved jacket with quarter lenght sleeve shirt under it....hmmm
mabey even a casual dress like a sweater dress would be nice....not too much jewlery...

Dont forget to not stress to much about it though for the price youre paying youd better have fun there!!! :D
