first, divide the 13 by 5. This gives you 2 and 3/5's
divide the 13 by 4. and you get 3 with a remainder of 1, which is 3 and 1/4

To make a proper fraction out of an improper fraction, divide the numerator (the top number) by the denominator.
In the case of 13/5, the denominator (bottom number) goes into the top number twice, with three left over, so your proper fraction becomes 2 3/5.
But looking at your question, it seems that you want to subtract 13/4 from 13/5, and to do that you have to find the lowest common denominator for the two fractions.
That would be 20 (4x5) so you multiply the first fraction by 5/5
which gives you 65/20 and the second by 4/4 which gives you 52/20. Then you simply subtract 52 from 65 and you are left with 13/20, which is a proper fraction.
So I'm not sure what you are actually asking about?

Better check my math - I did that in my head and the numbers may not be correct.

I'm not sure what you mean by proper and improper. However, to solve that equation you need the least common denominator. LCD of 5 and 4 is 20. 13/5 = 52/20, 13/4 = 65/20; 52/20 - 65/20 = -13/20

just divide the top number by the bottom number so -

13/5 = 2 r 3 so you write 2 and 3/5
13/4 = 3 r 1 so you write 3 and 1/4

hope that helps x

It's easy! I'll try and explain how.
Ok, so you understand that you have to get these all into that 5? You just work out how much times that 5 Goes into the 13 and put the remainder at the top
so 13/5 = 2 + 3/5

now try it out on that other one and just subtract them!

well all you do is simply get the denominator and devide it into the numerator.. the answer will be your new fraction

REMAINDER???

you devide like i said.. and if there is a remainder.. put it beside quotent and make it into a fraction.. so if the remainder is 3 and then you get the previously devided denominator and make it the demonitor under the remainder.. so if the remainder is 3.. and the denominator is say.. 7 then it is 3/7

you would do (13 div. by 5) - (13 div. by 4) =
step 1:
-->13 div. by 5 = 2 3/5

step 2:
-->13 div. by 4 = 3 1/5

Answer:
-->2 3/5 - 3 1/5
