I have answered this question so many times, I decided to dedicate a web site to answer this question. Here it is:
http://www.life-after-harry-potter.com
Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each book along with a brief summary of adult content. There is also a "Reader's Choice" list of favorite books, and a list of heroine sorcery fantasy books.
Best scifi action adventure book ever: Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne - free online. Also excellent: his 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Mysterious Island and Around the World in 80 Days
Best scifi mystery: Isaac Asimov's "Elijah Baley" books. Warning: adult content in 3rd book
Other good mysteries
Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. Read them in order. Think: CSI London 1890
I hope this helps.

The Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan. It is categorized under the teen section in most bookstores, but is really for any age.
The story is about a vampire's assistant and all of the things that they go through. I don't want to let you in on anymore than that though, because I would hate to give away any portion. There are twelve books to the series, and all twelve are worth reading numerous times.

The Beach by Alex Garland is good but creepy. It's about a society secluded from the real world out of choice by living on an island and never leaving.

the World of Null-A.
it has all the elements that you mentioned in the above paragraph accept magic. you will love it!
Null-A is the first and best part of a trilogy. it was written in the late 1920's i believe and is not only considered a classic but one of the most important science fiction books ever written.
it is a short book with a very tight but complicated plot and the most surprising ending you may ever read.
read it and let me know what you think.
my avatar is named after the main character.

You should definitely try anything written by Dean Koontz! He's an awesome writer and he has a little bit of everything you're interested in. Try starting with Lightning, Watchers, or the Odd Thomas books. Trust me, you won't regret it!!!
