first, you need the same denominator (number on bottom)
to do this, you need a number that is divisible by both 7 and 3. let's use 21.

to calculate a number that is equal to 1/3, but with 21 as a denominator, you need to multiply 1/3 by 7/7 ( which is one.. and we know that this is okay because any number multiplied by one is that number)

1/3 x 7/7 = 7/21

do the same for 6/7, but multiply by 3/3
6/7 x 3/3 = 18/21

now, add the two:

7/21 + 18/21 = 25/21
since the numerator is higher than denominator, you know that you can pull out a whole.

25/21 (pull out 21/21) = 1
leaving you with:

1 and 4/21

Find a comman denomanator(bottem #) then add nummerators (top #) so fine the least comman facter of 3 and 7 which is 21 so you make them both to 21ths so

3 X ?=21 is 7 so 1 X 7=7 so its 7/21
7 X ?=21 is 3 so 6 X 3 =18 so its 18/21

7/21 + 18/21= 25/21 or 1 4/21

1/3 = 7/21
6/7 = 18/21

7/21 + 18/21 = 25/21 or converted to a mixed number = 1 4/21

when adding fractions, you need a common denominator, a sure fire way to get one is to multiply both the denominators together, that is to say that since 3 times 7 = 21, 21 is your denominator. you multiplied the first denominator by 7 therefore you MUST multiply the top by 7too, which gives you 7/21....the second fraction's denominator you multiplied by 3, therefore you must also multiply the 6 by 3, = 18 / 21....

now you have 7 / 21 + 18/21..... NOW you can add them since the denominators are the same...7+ 18 = 25...therefore
your answer is 25/ 21 or maybe your teacher wants it in 'mixed' form, ....1 and 4/21...since 25 goes into 21 once, with 4 leftover... hope that helps :)

Solve for common denominator. What you do to the denominator you must do the same to the numerator.

The common denominator is 21.
7/7(1/3)+3/3(6/7)

7/21+18/21

The final answer is 25/21 or 1_4/21

find the common denominator. You can use 21.

21/3= 7 and 21/7=3 so then you take 7 multiply by top number this equals 7, then the next fraction do the same 3 times the top number = 18.

18+7= 25

so your answer is 25/21

I hope I didn't just confuse you more...

first you get the least common denominator which would be 21...

3 * 7 = 21
7 * 3 = 21

7/21 + 18/21 = 25/21
add the numerator when your denominators are the same and keep the denominator

OK - in order to solve you need a least common denominator. (LCD)

1/3 + 6/7 = ?; ok LCD is 21

7/21 + 18/21 + ? ; now that you convert to 21's you can add

25/21 ; not bad - but your teacher may want as a mixed number

1 4/21.

Hope this helps.
