the only materials that can be used are cardboard, tape and glue. the project must be a light weight because the more the project weighs in GRAMS the more points taken off from 650. so it has to weigh as light as possible. the project will FREE FALL from the top of the bleachers of high school stands. the project must hit the target below and there will be a time limit of getting the egg out of the project and if the egg breaks in that process, it's a fail. There shouldn't be anything on the egg (no tape, no glue) when presenting it to the teacher before the egg is dropped and after it is dropped. the teacher should be able to take a sharpie marker and make a mark on the egg while the egg is in the project before it is dropped. this project is due Oct 26, 2007! please help!!!

I have never done this project myself, but what you need is some type of light weight cardboard that will compress upon impact. The idea is to make something that will absorb the kinetic energy of the fall as it compresses/deforms, thereby making the deceleration of the egg last longer, and be slower.

For example, dropping the egg onto concrete causes it to stop IMMEDIATELY upon hitting the ground, causing a very high impulse. If you dropped it onto something soft and compressible (like a foam cushion) the egg is decelerated over a longer time, resulting in a lower force to the egg.

See the link below on impulse. The mass of the egg and the change in velocity are constant. If you change the amount of time that the egg has to decelerate, the force that is applied to the egg will decrease. That is your goal.

So try to find a way to make a small, strong box out of cardboard and then surround it with folded W shapes of softer cardboard that will crush when it lands.

Successful Egg Drop Project

I would recommend a many stage break...

Create a stage by cross cutting the center. This will form an inverted flower with its petal on the inside. When th egg hits the center the petals will yield allowing the egg to the next stage and so on.

The cardboard stiffness, the size of the catch box and the height of the drop will determine the number of stages.

Have fun and
Good luck!

i think that if you cover the egg in any material and put it in a cardboard box, it wont break. make sure that the egg dosent have any room to move around
