Definitely California. We've got every kind of terrain, environment and weather imaginable and lots more culture. places to go and things to do. We've got the beaches and the mountains and everything in between and you can get from one to the other in an hour or so.

On the downside, our cities are crowded and smoggy and it costs a freakin' mint to live here.

I'm a native Californian who has lived in Texas since age 12. California is a beautiful place and very diverse in landscape, but so is Texas. True, Texas does not have mountains, but it does have beaches, deserts, plains, wooded areas, the Hill Country, and the Brush Country. Whoever said California has more culture is wrong, however. I think Texas has more culture and a different culture than California does.

In California, every city seems the same, especially in Southern California. In Texas, you can find very Metropolitan areas and also areas with a very Western feel, like West Texas, Amarillo, Fort Worth; and some cities with a very Latin feel, like San Antonio, El Paso, Laredo, Corpus Christi, McAllen. Some cities in East Texas have a somewhat Cajun feel to them, like Beaumont, Port Arthur, because of the proximity to Louisiana.

Texas is a more laid back lifestyle, and the people are friendlier. I noticed this when I started school in Texas. The kids were a lot friendlier than the kids in California. Texas still has a homely feel to it, while California seems very money oriented. I think the people in Texas are more "salt of the earth" types instead of those that are trying to live large.

Texas is also a lot less expensive, as some others have mentioned. You could buy a stunningly huge and beautiful house here for 400,000 and in California you might get a little tract home, if you're lucky, in that price range. Texas also has no state income tax. It just depends what you're looking for as to which is better.

California. Whoever thinks that Texas has more culture than California either hasn't been to many cities throughout the state or is just a complete idiot. In Texas there isn't any sense of of true diversity. In California there are complete areas of diverse races. Anyone that drives through Los Angeles, San Francisco or San Diego areas would know that. In Texas you have to actually look around to find more diversity whereas in California its just there.

The part about which is better is just a matter of opinion.

I love both states...however, I find that the cost of living is more expensive in California.
If I could afford Cali, I'd be there (in Sonoma County, actually) because it is far-more beautiful.
But Texas has its own unique charm.

Cali has much better public transportation, Texas has more affordable housing.

Here's a very useful link.
Check out the living factors for taxes, which is where you'll get hammered.

I say Texas only because I'm from here.. born and raised.
The people are friendly the view is beauitful. Best thing ever is waking up in the morning looking out the window and watching the sun come up over the hills reflecting on the lake.

Depends on the person. Depends on where you live within those particular states. Depends on if you prefer living in a state that is more expensive (Cali) versus a state with a higher level of house foreclosures even though its cheaper (Texas). Depends if you want a very exciting nightlife versus a more relaxed nightlife. Depends if you like overweight women versus in shape women. Depends if you like cowboys/cowgirls versus city boys/girls. Depends if you like a more 'authentic' cultural foods versus cultural foods with a blend of something else (ie. Tex-Mex). Depends on if you like more milder whether all year round or if you want to be looking out of hurricanes/floods/tornadoes certain parts of the year (California has earthquakes but in 20 years of living I haven't felt a single one, but I didn't live near the fault line either). Depends if you like having a more diverse selection of things to get into or not. Depends if you want to be around more liberals versus conservatives. Depends if you want to be around more pedophiles or not. Depends if you want have a chance at sophisticated women or not. Depends if you can deal with a wider range of people with different personalities or not. Depends if you want to be somewhere where people are always in your business because they don't have a life of their own or not. Depends if you like rather be in a state with a higher crime rate versus a state where their government officials, educators, police and crime lab technicians go to jail almost as often as the average citizen. Depends if you prefer to live in a state with more street gangs versus a state that has more open, institutionalized racism. Depends if you want to be somewhere you will have more opportunity for advancement in life versus a more relaxed lifestyle.

It just all depends, too many variables.

I like that TX has "Drive Friendly" signs. CA needs a few of those. I have been in CA 15 years now and been in TX plenty of times. I think I'd rather go to TX. CA is too overpopulated, too expensive, and the people ain't that friendly.
