I don't think a doctor should choose/control whether or not a patient lives or dies. It's their responsibility to give you every single bit of information about your condition, treatment options, etc, but it should only be the patient's choice as to how they choose to cope with their illness. A lot of people choose to not take radiation with cancer treatment, even though they know that it may result in a shortened life, but it may, in turn, result in them having a HEALTHY last few months. Most doctors will encourage you to do what's best in their eyes, but only you can make that choice alone.

I'm not sure what you mean by a doctor controlling whether the patient lives or dies. Noone has to go to a doctor if they do not want to. Noone has to take the doctor's advice if they do not want to. I don't know where you live, but in the USA we can also choose whether or not we want to be rescuciated.
