2x-3y=17
x+y= -4

Multiply the 2nd equation with 2
2x+2y=-8

now deduct this from the 1st equation
2x-3y=17
2x+2y=-8
---------------
0x-5y=25

-5y=25
y=-5

now substitute this y=-5 in the second equation
x+y=-4
x-5=-4
x=-4+5
x=1

multiply x+y=-4 by 3

3x + 3y = -12
2x - 3y = 17

5x -0 = 5
5x = 5
x=1

x+y = -4
y = -x - 4

2x-3y = 17
set y = -x - 4
2x-3(-x - 4) = 17
2x+3x+12 = 17
5x = 5
x = 1
