Yes, they can, but a player has to pay for the ball. If a player just gives a ball to a fan, the player is charged for the ball. If a player throws the ball in "unsportsmanlike manner," he is charged for the ball and can be fined (this is when a game is stopped.) If a player throws a ball to the stands (or anywhere else) when the time is running, the team is penalized for delay of game.

The fan can keep it. I've got one from Shannon Sharpe. Someone told me the players get fined for throwing balls into the stands.

of course, roy williams for the lions always tries to give his TD ball to a kid, they r fined for bombing one into the stands though

Yeah they can....

My mom almost got one actually...it got deflected over the side lines about two seats down...bummer...A pass from Favre himself..that would have been great for her.
