Sure they can, if someone writes a virus to attack them. The majority of computer users have Windows based PCs, most corporations use Windows based PCs. If you were going to write a virus with the intent of causing the most damage, you target the Windows operating system, not the Mac operating system.

No OS is virus proof. There are viruses, worms, trojans and other malware for Mac OS as well as every flavor of Unix. However, since the majority of computers on the internet run some form of Windows, that's what people write viruses for because there's a bigger payoff for them. As the number of people using Mac OS and Unix increases, so will the viruses and malware targeting them.

Yes, they can. They are rarer because

1. fewer people use macs. It is more efficient for virus-writers to target the most popular operating system, which is windows.

2. Mac OS is based off of linux, which is pretty secure.

Many mac users have a false sense of ultimate security, so that is one aspect that makes them more vulnerable, however.

I believe that this is not true. I think the reality is that Mac's make up a much smaller percentage of the market, therefore, it has not been as profitable for those who create viruses to create them to infiltrate Mac systems.
