actually, any birth control you take now can give you fewer periods should you choose not to take the placebo pills in each pack. research has now proven that there are no ill effects from eliminating your period completely, and could even be better for you. i just started yaz, and my doc wants me to take the whole pack for about 4 months to make sure there is no break through spotting/bleeding, then i will be eliminating the placebo pills and going period free!! talk to your mom and doc about all the latest research when you get to the office. doc should be able to set aside any fears mom might have.

I'm on Yaz - it doesn't give you fewer periods, just makes your period shorter. I used to get my period 7+ days a month, now I'm down to 3 days on the Yaz - it's fantastic! I agree with your mom, there isn't enough research done yet - but that's just my opinion - personally, everyone I know that has tried the pills that give you fewer periods has had a really bad experience (bad side effects, breakthrough bleeding, etc.). But everyone is different and reacts differently to medications. As for talking to your doctor - just go in and ask him/her. Get their professional opinion. It would also help to do some research before you talked to your doctor, so you are well informed of the different options you have.

There is plenty of research supporting fewer periods and until the new pills were developed Dr's often advised a women who wanted fewer periods to just take them consistently for 84 days omitting the "break pills" and then take 7 days of the "break pills" to have a cycle. You will be OK - just ask your Dr and take the pill your mom prefers - it is a win /win. Good Luck!

You and your mom should talk to your doctor together about it. I was on the 4 period a year pill for a year and a half - I would still be on it if my insurance didn't drop it. I loved it! My mom was also worried but I told her that first, I have my own insurance now so can do what I please, and second, the doctor wouldn't prescribe it if it wasn't safe.

you should ask your doctor if this is right for you...if you are really young that could be a reason why your mother wants to you to stay on the 'normal' one. but really, there are a lot of different types. mine regulates my period for only 3 days. i think you could handle that!!

I just read that it's perfectly fine not to have a period every month because women weren't made to ovulate as regularly as we do now (we do now because of better nutrient intake). Go pick up this month's Cosmo, it's one of the cover stories.
