Yes this is true. The other answers are correct in that the oil from the compressor drains out and needs time to settle back in to it. It migh not take 24 hours, but I would give it at least 6. If you don't, good chances are you will burn up the compressor.

Lying a refrigerator on its side can cause the compressor oil to flow into the cooling lines. Once it is stood up afterwards, it takes time for the compressor oil to drain back out, and this can affect the cooling function. The general rule is to wait the same amount of time it was on its side before plugging it back in (ie: if it was horizontal for 24 hours, stand it up and wait 24 hours before plugging it back in). Yes, because the coolant in the fridge needs a chance to settle back. If you plug it in prematurely after it's been on its side, it could damage it.

Yes it is true. The Freon needs to settle again before trying to cool the unit.

Yes. You must give it time for the oil to drain back into the compressor.
