Actually there are several theories of how "tip" came to be, but the most well-documented one is the one I listed. There are others. I didn't just find it off of the internet- I researched it. Be nice, guys! This is for info sharing, not for bashing research!

In the old days they used to ship fertilizer in the bottom of ships, when the manure got wet, it released methan gas. When people checked on it using candlelight, it would explode. So they stamped on the outside of the manure crates, (S.H.I.T) Ship High In Transit so that it didn't get wet.
