i tried an outback sport impreza and i thought it was a good car. It will be very reliable and great in the snow. I recommend purchasing an outback with the 2.5L motor, instead of the 2.2L motor that the older models came with. The extra power is great for driving up hills in a fully loaded car.
I currently own a WRX wagon, which is similar to the outback in many ways and here are the things I like: reliability, AWD for winter, cargo space of the wagon (compared to a sedan)
here are the things I don't like: interior is fine but not as upscale as some other small cars like the mazda3, not much soundproofing
If you know how to drive a manual transmission I strongly recommend you try an Impreza WRX wagon before you buy the outback. The extra power in the WRX might make you think twice about the outback!
I will likely get an STi as my next car. I am a big fan of how turbocharged subarus drive

I have owned my 2002 Outback Sport Impreza for more than 2 years now and I'm very satisfied with it. For my wife and I, its our road car - what we take on long trips. Its the car we go to the mountains and when its raining outside. Its versatile, ideal for my lifestyle and reliable. In fact, my only problem was a bad battery (a new battery fixed the problem) and fortunately nothing mechanical with the car. I maintain this car regularly so that also helps with the reliability.
This is definitely a fun car to drive, very agile, quick and responsive and with all-wheel-drive you do feel more security when the roads are wet particularly on a hard turn. The thing to keep in mind with an AWD vehicle is the fact that the gas mileage isn't as good as 2WD car of the same size. In addition, when it is time to replace the tires you need to replace all four at the same time - so be sure to rotate your tires regularly.
Would I recommend this car?... Yes. Would I buy this car again?... Yes, but like one of your previous responses, I would probably upgrade to at least a WRX (though I would love to get STI - but it wouldn't be practical for me.) If you look at Consumer Reports, Impreza's (particularly non-turbo) are very reliable and thats looking back over the years plus their front crash test ratings are usually second to none.
