The contribution of a PTA/PTO depends on the parents involved and the area you live in. The PTO at my child's school is VITAL to the quality of education and activities at the school because we live in an economically depressed area where school budgets are small and money for extras is nil.
Our PTO provides stipends for all teachers to buy classroom extras, purchases all magazine subscriptions for classrooms and library (weekly reader, scholastic, etc.), has a sunshine fund to send flowers/cards to staff when there is illness or death in the family, provides funding for buses for field trips, holds a staff appreciation luncheon, provides parental assistance for school picture days, performance testing, etc., runs of end of school fun day/picnic, purchases mulch for the playground, I could go on and on.
Funding for these activities is provided from a few fundraising events during the year, which is unfortunately annoying, but necessary.
I was completely unaware of the importance of these organizations until I became involved, and now I see what a fantastic contribution these groups can be to a school.
Edited to add (in response to below)-
I work full time, as do many of the members of our group. It is a nice balance of stay-at-home parents who can help out during the school day, and those of us who contribute more in other areas.

LOL well it allows housewives with no lives to have an extra activity to fill their boring existances with. U r a very rude and unintellectual person as well as a hypocrite "generalising" is spelled "generalizing". u critiqued me for an abbreviation which got my point accross just fine. Who cares about grammar as long as the gist of my question gets across. It seems most other ppl understood the question. I guess u must b a lil bit more illiterate than they r.

The PTA's I've been associated with provided activities and supplies for the students. They covered "extra" cost the schools couldn't afford - field trips, school carnivals, school supplies for arts and crafts... etc.
