Personally, I think only one person should pay for the modem, and then that person will get to keep it when you all go your separate ways.
That's what I did with my old roommate. We split the cost of the monthly bill, but I bought the modem, and took it with me when I moved out.
Alternatively, you could probably rent the modem (assuming your ISP gives you this option). It usually costs a few dollars extra a month, but it would solve your problem.

Yes, you should pay for it. It ought to have been understood before the DSL was installed that these sorts of expenses would be part of the deal.
You can talk to your roomates and see if they would be willing to give you a reduced rate. But as you all agreed to the DSL to begin with, they understandably would expect you to pay your part. Since you just got the bill, you probably had the thing installed about a month ago, so you will have used it for nearly three months when you leave. You could ask if your part of the modem fee could be $15 rather than the full $40.
Another thought is to ask the person who is taking your place (assuming there is a new roomate coming on board) if they would mind paying for part of the modem. Don't hold your breath on that one.

Personally, I wouldn't rent the modem, you can usually buy them for about the same cost as a year of renting one. Then you could take it with you!
Is the $120 the fee the only fee you have to pay or is it a yearly rental fee? If it's a yearly fee (which it usually is) the answer is simple, just prorate it $10 a month.

I would think you should pay for it. But is someone else moving in when you move out? Have them pay you up front when they move in. I would pro-rate the fee so that they pay you back the portion that covers the modem for the time that they live there.

The answer to this is somewhere between $0 and $40.
While it isn't fair for you to pay $40, it also isn't fair for you to pay $0.
Negotiate.
Here is what I would do. Count up the number of months that each of you will be there and add them up. Divide 120 by the answer. The result is a fair fee per person per month.
(who said word problems wouldn't come in handy in the real world........)

The fair thing to do would be to pay your share and then collect a portion back from the new roommate.
What would you say if one or both of your roommates told you next month that they feel that they shouldn't have to pay their share of the internet bill because they only used the 'net for 5 minutes?

Seems that you were not aware of a hardware purchase to get this sevice. What else might not you be aware of? Many service providers include a mail-in rebate ,for hardware, that refunds the full price when you commit to a full year of service. Perhaps your room-mate is trying to cover his total obligation by mis-informing you as to the true expense of this service-which may have been a miscalculation on his part. As I see it $112.00 for a couple of months service is not a huge price to pay compared to the lessons learned-lessons that will last a lifetime.

i think of who ever is calling the different to flow out, would desire to be the only to pay and one would desire to definately not alway being paying. I actual would not mooch off somebody all of the time, nor do I surely have that expectation I hate the actual incontrovertible fact that merely bc you would be able to earn an stronger paycheck, capacity you are the breadwinner. places distinctive tension on the breadwinner and deflates the ego of the different persons efforts.

You need to discuss this with your roommates. I don't think you should have to pay for the entire third but you will still be using it for two months so should pay for at least part of it. Talk to them and see what is reasonable for all of you.
