I heard that on ESPN radio yesterday and asked a similar question to my husband. I don't think it is funny or cute, but many of the things those guys say are just stupid comments, so it is pretty much par for the course with them.
Ok all you people who are offended. We all know that there was a NY baseball Giants team, and we also know that there is no longer a NY Giants baseball team, so today, we no longer need a clarification by Chris Berman. I doubt many are going to get all confused when someone says Eli Manning of the NY Giants had a great day. I can't imagine anyone turning to their wife or husband and saying "now is that the baseball giants or the football giants.
We don't need to be insulted for having our opinions in the matter.

its not gay or stupid its history. its about 89 years old when ny had the baseball giants that eventually went to sf and the football giants. to differentiate between teams the baseball giants were just the giants and the football team was the football giants. some of you younger knuckleheads need to do some research before answering or commenting.

It's tradition. Something the San Francisco Giants had to steal.
The NY baseball Giants played in NY until 1957, by the way.
I'd prefer it iof they called them the New Jersey football Giants, as well, sice they've played in NJ for over twenty five years.

I'm not sure if they think it's cute, it's just a part of history. Stupid? Maybe. Silly? Yes. However, It's New York and even if Championships don't the sports world does revolve around New York.

Because they're in New Jersey. (The New York Baseball Giants are in San Francisco.)
That is, there are no real "New York" Giants (unless there's a Little League team.)

Some older people will remember that New York once had a "New York Baseball Giants". So these older folk like to differentiate.

It relates back to when there was also a baseball team with the same name.I think enough time has passed so that phrase can be put to bed.

It's just another "clever" sports catch phrase to color up the commentary. There are a million of other "cutesy" things in sports broadcast that could just as easily be questioned with a "why?".

Because that's their whole name. I like it much better than when they try shortening all the names into ridiculous nicknames like the Jags or Pats or whatever. That's their name, and that's tradition.
