there are small minded people every where. sounds like you ran into a few. I've gone to Mexico and never had any problems. I have friends that go every year that are black and they have never told me that they where treated badly, and they speak Spanish better than I can. now I do have a Palestinian friend that came back from a trip to Mexico and complained that he was treated badly by some people on a charter boat he was on

My mate, I am a Mexican living in Cancun, the most visited city by north Americans. It all depends on which town you've been to, because each city has a different culture (and like any other place in the world, people have their own prejudices).
I have to say that racism in Mexico is something that happens every day. Not only to black or Asian visitors, but also between Mexicans. Like in most parts of the world, whites own the best houses, cars, etc. Unlike some white supremacists or even regular US proud citizens may think, we know that the US are not to blame for all our economic, social and political problems (but we do know that your government is to blame for a great deal of problems in the whole world).
So, my advice is: Don't take it personal! I'm sure being called "negrito" or "chino" is not something that makes you happy, but I'm also sure that most of the people in Mexico who called you that way didn't mean to be aggressive, it's just them trying to be friendly and funny, amigou! (of course it's not the best way, but maybe the only way they know). If you were not allowed to enter a place and you were not being rude, you weren't drunk or stoned, or dressed like a bum, you should complain (yes, in Mexico you can complain, too), there is an office called PROFECO, and depending on the case, they can even shut the place down.
Finally, just remember that most of our modern Third World societies have been modeled after yours! If you have racism back in the US, what made you think your little brother would be any different?

I have added this as an interesting question. I too will be interested in finding out what the population has to say to this!!
I have many Mexican friends and haven't heard of this before. And when my kids went to Mexico, the had a blast. We are Alaskan Native.
I will be looking back to see other answers here!!

Vote with your feet. Don't vacation in Mexico again. Spend your vacation dollars where people won't harsh on you.

Most people in this world are proud of their racism, especially minorities. They only demand other people stop discriminating against them, they still act like it is OK to discriminate against others.
