Input on each question;
1) Should the U.S. governemnt get into the major drug business? We could manufacture, market and sell all the drugs like heroin, marijuana, LSD, crack, cocaine and you name it. We could sell it in places like a bar and pocket the profits. Imagine the potential.
2) Do you feel we would have more, about the same or less users if it were sold by our government?
3) Is there really any difference between these drugs and alcohol?
Thanks for you time and honesty.

Nice Libertarian question for a change. Thanks in advance.

1. Sure, the government could regulate those drugs, just like alcohol and tax it accordingly.
2. I don't think we'd have more users, probably about the same amount. The users we have would probably broaden their horizons and be polysubstance abusers.
3. Alcohol is a drug, there is no difference. Both alter reality and perception.

Extra credit...I'd be for legalizing that stuff as long as we refused ANY social services to people who elect to use those substances. It's evident that many cannot use alcohol or drugs and maintain a job. It's futher evident that many will commit crimes under the influence. Forget treatment instead of jail...legalize it, and punish abuse with both jail and then probation with mandated treatment...or serve the whole sentence and skip probation and treatment.

To the people saying LSD is physically addictive, there is NO PROOF AT ALL to back up this statement.

1) As far as the government getting into that kind of drug business, I'm not really for that because the government already spends our tax dollars very foolishly. I think they should just legalize it all and let dealers advertise, set up stands on the corner, etc. Sure, it can be taxed so the greedy government can get something from it.

2) The amount of users would likely stay about the same. There might be a few more users of the safer drugs like marijuana and LSD.

3) Marijuana and LSD are much safer than alcohol. Heroin and cocaine are very dangerous drugs and so is alcohol. I think alcohol can be enjoyed responsibly while cocaine and heroin use of any multitude isn't very responsible. I do think Americans should be given back their Constitutional right to take whatever substances they want into their body. It used to be in the Constitution.

1. No, the federal government should not be in any business. It has no right or authority to be in any business.

Now, it could regulate, license and tax the use of such substances, in conjuction with the states' getting their share of the lucre.

2. Perhaps the revenue from the licenses and taxes could fund rehabilitation clinics?

3. Yes, some of those drugs lead to much more severe problems than alcohol. An alcoholic can function in society, holding down a job and even succeeding in business, but a crackhead can't, IMO.

But those drug bars would be dens of filth, with all sorts of criminals and prostitutes and crack-heads hanging around.

As for marijuana, that stuff is so easy to grow at home (hey, it grows like a weed!) if it ever became legal, there's no way the government could control it, IMO. But it would be nice to have hemp as a viable commercial resource again.

1) No. But I do feel marijuana should be legalized and treated (and taxed) much like alcohol is. The other illegal drugs are simply bad for you and should continue to be illegal. Marijuana has never been proven to be more harmful than alcohol.

2) We would probably have more users of marijuana if it were legal but I also feel the alcohol consumption would go down. Maybe this actually is a very GOOD thing.

3) All the other (not marijuana) drugs are, of course, different than alcohol. Give me a break. I don't think we want more users of heroin or LSD or crack or meth running around.

Heroine, LSD, Crack and cocaine are extremely physically addictive, and immediately dangerous in strong doses. They should only be prescribed by doctors as necessary. Not that there's many medical uses for those that can't be accomplished by safer drugs, but they definitely shouldn't be sold over the counter- way too dangerous.

Marijuana is probably actually a little bit safer for the individual than Alcohol, but still shouldn't be sold directly by the government- we have a free market economy.

Why on earth would the govt want to market drugs that will keep people from leading productive lives just so they can get high? If it were more available, the cost was less, and it was legal I'm sure more people would buy drugs. There is definitely a difference beetween alcohol and drugs. Alcohol costs less and it's legal.

This debate is not even worthy of thought.
We all know that prohibition didnt work.
and that weed is milder than alcohol, so there is no reason for it being illegal...

If america is based on freedoms then drugs should be allowed but discouraged as addiction is a downward spiral...

The reason it is illegal is because it encourages deeper awareness and rebellious attitudes towards a controlling elite.
also the court systems make billions not to mention the lawyers and judges that would be jobless....lol.....
all of the free space in jails might save us money....

the best reason is to take the money out of the drug lords hands,,, these are truly evil people... let it make us some tax money....

1. No, it is not the role of government to earn a profit by any means.

2. More, because we would be sending the message to new generations that drug usage is condoned and encouraged.

3. Alcohol is a drug.

Yes legalizing drugs such as heroin etc would make a difference on who buys and sells them. Might eliminate the crime aspect and it might benefit some people other than lining their pockets with money.

After all, seriously this is big business. Why should not the government tax these entities.

1) yes i think they should..i believe financially it would help the deficit get payed off, save us money on this so called "war on drugs" and create many new jobs
2) I think it would be the same..i don't think it being illegal has kept anyone from doing it and i don't think making it legal would make people who are not doing them right now rush out and do them
3) i think alcohol is way more dangerous then pot but the others you mentioned is just as dangerous if not more then alcohol in my opinion
