Caesar was the first emperor of Rome. Before that, it was a republic. He conquered Gaul (France), and was extremely popular with both the army and the average person. With the might of the army behind him, and the support of the common man he was able to strong arm his way into being proclaimed emperor. Needless to say, this made him extremely unpopular with the Senate, which had ruled Rome before this. When he refused to rise to greet them when they visited him, they took it as a great slight, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Ironically, some historians now think that his downfall may have been due to his epilepsy (I'm epileptic too, so don't think I'm being prejudiced). Some persons who are epileptic tend to have their personality traits become more pronounced over time. Caesar was probably pretty egotistical, given all the things he'd done, and how he bragged about himself (he claimed to have conquered Britain twice, when in fact he was driven out once, and at best the second time was a draw). This egotism may have caused him to reach the point where he believed he could overthrow the entire Roman system of government. Unfortunately for him, he was right.
