The laptop is a toshiba portege a100 and the hard drive in it has gone corrupt. a blue screen keeps coming up when i switch it on! i need a 40gb-80gb hard drive please i do not mind 40gb as there is a 40gb in it already and that is fine for me. Also if you know any way where i can repair my hard drive please can you let me know :aj_adnan8@yahoo.co.uk

.. you need to determine if u have sata or ata ... probably ata but doublecheck .. i would first try booting from a windows install disk ... delete partitions then try to format .. if it formats all the way chance are that its ok ..

You can find replacement 40-80gb notebook drives on Ebay... If you're hearing clicking or grinding noises at start up then yes, you've probably got physical damage to the drive and need a new one. This does occur more frequently with laptops/notebooks than desktops because the hard drives take more jolts and knocks from being lugged around instead of sitting in a shock-free corner somewhere.

If you aren't hearing any telltale signs, your drive may physically be ok. The first thing to try is booting from your windows xp CD and trying a repair install. That will scan all of your system files and replace any which are missing or damaged.

If you've got extensive file corruption (beyond what a repair install can fix, but no physical damage to the drive) you can just delete the existing partition and restore your OS from scratch using the original CDs.

I believe the Protege series uses regular old ATA notebook drives like the one below.
