In designing an "Ice breaker" game you don't want the group to center on one person or on information which not all people have. You want to have a game where people are forced to work together, share information about eachother and thereby become better friends, etc. Here are a couple of odd ones we used.

We had a group which met once a month and came up with a great way to 'ice break'. Very inexpensive too.

Take a deck of cards and take out only as many cards as will match your group. (10 people, 5 cards) Tear the cards in half and mix them up. At the beginning of the night, give one half of a card to each person. Their task then is to find the other half of the card they hold. This forces people to meet, talk and get to know one another. (Now obviously this will not work with odd number of people.)

You can also have a prize for the first (and may be the last) match found.

Now back when things were a little "looser" we had a game for everyone. It was played after the first few drinks and people were starting to loosen up. It's called 'Sardine'.

Take a deck of cards (or straws or whatever) and use them to designate one person (secretly) as THE SARDINE. Without revealing who is the sardine, turn off the lights (in some places it's a good idea to leave a candle or two just to keep people from freaking out in the dark.)
Now, the object of the game works like this: Once the lights go out, the Sardine hides. Now a game of seek takes place, with everyone on their hands and knees moving about the house. Each time they encounter someone they whisper "Are you the sardine?" if the answer is No, then they both move on. If the answer is YES, then that person also becomes a sardine and is thereby obligated to squeeze in with the sardine(s) and wait for the game ti finish. Obviously the fun is for the sardines who find themselves wedged in together. Also it becomes increasingly difficult for the sardines to mask their hiding spot once the giggles start.

Set a time length and possibly a break between bouts of Sardine.

Have a list of questions about the host, such as what is the host's favorite color, place to eat, tv show, vacation spot, season, piece of jewelry, etc. What is the host's least favorite chore, etc. The one who knows the host best wins a prize.
