When it crosses elders say. Come back sit at home, drink water and then leave.
It is followed in many countries and many cultures?
Instead of coming and telling me that you don’t believe it, I want people to share why they say it. What is the story behind it in different cultures?

There were lots of customs / rituals / procedures followed by every religion. They have both literary and expressional meanings. There were lots signs, bad omens, right and wrong signals came through prophesies to us. It was clearly explained with the wisdom behind it. But over a period of time some people protected this information and even some are lost. When any of these are followed without knowing its inner meaning it is called Superstition.

Example : Dog crying, Cat crossing, right leg hitting and slipping, left leg hitting and slipping, lizard falling on you,

But there is lots stupid superstition, which are followed by insecure people. For example, not to stand from the current position when batsman is batting well like that.

Yes you are right some of the superstitious are imposed by some sect of people to make things benefit for them.

Eg: Some sect would say people should not marry in a particular month. But they would marry in this month.

True Experience & Joke :
Whenever cat used to cross me, I never used to stop. I was totally against it. I felt it was stupidity. But one day, it crossed me 12 times. Then I was going to my friend’s house for studies. After reaching there I changed my dress, before going to bed, I told my friend, how stupid this thought was (cat crossing). We slept, suddenly around 11.30 p.m., call came from one of his relatives (pregnancy pain) and had to rush to hospital. We somehow managed to arrange a car, and we rushed to her house. When we were leaving, one lady banged the door and my finger got stuck in the door. Trust me it was such a worst pain. I was shouting along with the pregnant women. In fact, she started laughing in between.

Since then I believe in some of them followed seriously.

there are things like if you see a black cat in the morning or cat crossing while leaving or even seeing brush on your way out is bad. things like dont call from behind and if you got out of house and realised you forgot something dont go back any step and if you do that then there is danger to come. they are all superstitions. i guess people fom the pats must have somehow had bad experiences with these and blamed that for their failure and all that.
eg. i went to this party in my teachers hose(in india). there was only one Sir in our whole school. he was there when me and my cousins went to the teachers house and befor he left he said bye to me. i man it was my face that he saw last before leaving. it was a friday so on sunday when i went to this club i was in, one of the students in our school who was there said that Sir had an acciden on his way back. he broke his arm. i knew this but hte next day when i saw him, i asked him what happened and he told me that he got involved in an accident. a dog jumped in front of his bike and he fell off and broke his arm. at last he adde " it was because of you! i saw your face before leaving. thats the reason. just joking" even if he said he was joking he still said it was because of my face. its not like anyone who leaves a party seeing me or any other person with my name would get into an accident. he is young and rides his bike very fast and that was the reason for the accident, still blame my face. sorry if i mad you baored but must have been the same with the people from the past. they blame an innocent thing for their fall or defeat!!!! i still dont know why i believe them. thats the strange thing, i believe the sayings, the superstitions!!!!!!!!!!

nearly forget to mention, your experience was funny but what if the cat hadnt crossed you and that happened?? or maybe the cat crossed you and that didnt happen to you?? it just coincidence. afte sayibg all this, i still dont know why i believe in in. a bit ,no, a lot insecure i think, of myself.

I am superstitious. But personally i don't know why elders treat 'Cat crossing' as a bad sign. I don;t believe in it. I think it is very bad to treat animals as a bad sign. Animals are so innocent,

In USA you're not supposed to let a black cat cross your path. I had a poor black cat and I actually had friends that were afraid of him and he was the friendliest cat ever!

An old one is about a black cat crossing your path, but very few Americans care about it. Also, owning black cats negates it, and is also good luck.

Personally, I don't care about black cats and I would be much more worried if an elephant crossed my path, especially since killer rouge elephants are common. Black cats won’t hurt me much, maybe hiss, an elephant though outweighs me and it can charge.

- A black cat crossing you path is considered UNLUCKY in India, Moldavia, Romania and the Catholic Religion.
- A black cat crossing your path is considered LUCKY in Spain, Japan, Britain, Ireland and Italy.

During the Black Plague our European idiots thought that the plague was caused by curses and black cats were long known to be familiars of witches. So they killed as many cats as possible. Since the Black Plague was carried by the fleas on the rats the best way of getting rid of those rats would have been more cats.

Mentally deranged women like to have company and cats are the only pet that you can interact with and that are pretty much self maintaining. A dog is needy, wants to be walked, and eats all the food that is put before it. A cat sleeps most of the day, eats only when hungry, and isn't needy. They don't care if their owners pet them and care for them or not. So they are safe pets to have for those who can't even take care of themselves.

Thus the wives tales that these poor women had to be witches was born. Since they did some strange things or at least look strange they were often accused of being witches. A few of them knew herbal cures and simple home remedies which they were willing to share, this only gave them the reputation of having secret knowledge and jealous people accused them of being witches.

Black is the color of night and evil so a black cat is considered unlucky. It is a superstition that got started in Europe by ignorant people who didn't know better. It was spread to places where Europeans colonized like India. Since there is a Rat God in the Hindi religion they have another reason to dislike cats.

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_cats
“In Western history, black cats have often been looked upon as a symbol of evil omens: in other cultures, they are considered to be good omens. Black cats generally have green eyes but occasionally may have other eye colors…

Historically, black cats were symbolically associated with witchcraft and evil. In Hebrew and Babylonian folklore, cats are compared to serpents, coiled on a hearth.

In Europe, apart in Italy or Spain, a black cat crossing one's path is considered good luck; however they were also seen by the church as associated with witches. Black cats (and sometimes, other animals of the same colour, or even white cats) were sometimes suspected of being the familiars of witches. The black cat was still usually seen as good luck; however, in the USA and parts of Europe (e.g. Spain), which saw witch hunts, the association with witches caused them to be considered as bad luck.

In places which saw few witch hunts, black cats retained their status as good luck, and are still considered as such in Japan, Britain and Ireland.

However in Romanian and Indian culture, especially in the historical region of Moldavia in Romania and everywhere in India, one of the strongest superstitions still feared by many people is that black cats crossing their path represents bad luck, despite the fact that these regions were never affected by witch hunts or anti-paganism.”
