Each state can be different according to needs, but I believe here in Texas it goes on a case by case basis. Andrea Yates who drowned her kids went to a state hospital but over half of mentally ill criminals are incarcerated in units specially designed for that purpose of isolating and providing treatment to mentally ill offenders.

There are state facilities for the criminally insane which are lock down secure facilities. If the person is not violent, they can be in the general population or in protected cells depending on their condition, vulnerability and if they are danger to them selves or others.

It depends if that person is deemed mentally competent to stand trail if you are determined by a shrink to understand perceedings then you go to a prison and serve time like every other criminal....but if a shrink passes to the judge that the defendant is unable or not competent to stand trail then they get locked away in a mental hospitial for the criminally insane

all killers, rapists and addicts are mentally ill... they were not supported and nurtured as children,,,,
we have only to blame ourselves for not helping the poor... or at least not forcing the rich to help them,,,,

notice the percentage of criminals from poverty stricken homes and also how many of them were abused as children,,,,,
