Typically yes. That's why first impressions are so important.
Sales people know this phenomenon, so they always strive to "put their best foot forward." in customer relationships.
If you come across as crude or a dork, it is very difficult to change that impression. Conversely, if you come across as kind and caring, it takes strong contrary evidence to change that impression.
Will people always believe the label they first give you? It depends on the person doing the labeling, and what you do subsequently. First impressions can be changed, but it takes a lot of work to do so. It is so much easier to make the right impression in the first place and enjoy a fine relationship thereafter.

It is said that 'first impression is the last impression'. But I beg to differ. It may be so only if you don't progress further in your relationship and let it stagnate. When they really get to know you they will be more than willing to change labels/opinion. But most likely continue to tease you with the first one in good humor (specially if it happened to be uncomplimentary).....

Only a superficial & shallow pretentious person would do that...
Imagine if we did not take the time to understand others where they grew up their cultures their languages etc...that would be sad sterotyping of others with no fairness
