It depends
If a person is lost, and have trouble finding who they are, they may resort to helping others as their life goal. For some, this phase may end as they find who they are within the people they help. Then, it was not a waste of their life, but a good purposeful moment of growth.
However, if a person is purely devoted to helping others, giving no time or profit to themselves, then although they may be doing good with their life, they are not fullfilling what they have obviously unknowingly willed to do
I would say that a good balance, a little more to yourself, is a good thing. It allows you to be available to others, and having an open mind are compassion for others, however, at the same time you are allowing yourself time to grow for your own heart.

You are wasting your life either way.
If you are selfish the only one you are serving is you and you don't live alone in this world so in many ways you are blowing opportunities to be bigger than yourself.
If you are not selfish then you never serve yourself and sooner or later there will be nothing left to share with anyone, even if you wanted to.
So if you are wasting your life it is probably because you cannot find a happy medium, a way to be true to yourself and to others as well.

Of course I am Selfish, so I am not wasting my life. I have be reaching to self , many times and enjoying the moments of my selfishness. what a benedictions!
